Honest Gate: Helium-3 Supply
A commercial burner unit demands roughly 400 times the domestic helium-3 supply — which is why the breeder and lunar helium-3 matter.
A fuel that does not yet exist at scale
Each commercial burner unit would consume roughly 400 times the entire domestic helium-3 supply. Terrestrial helium-3 exists only in tiny quantities — mostly from tritium decay in weapons stockpiles — and is spoken for by medical, security, and cryogenic uses. The burner is therefore gated on a fuel supply that does not exist at terrestrial scale.
This single fact is why the program is built as a pair. The breeder (Hyperion) makes helium-3 as a by-product: it breeds tritium, which decays to helium-3 on a fixed physical clock, producing roughly 1.97 kg/yr of helium-3 in its design class. And over the longer term, lunar regolith holds helium-3 that could be mined. The burner cannot be fueled today from Earth's standing inventory.
Honest sequencing
The order of the program follows from this gate: build the breeder first, accumulate a helium-3 supply, and only then field burners at scale. Claiming a near-term commercial burner fleet would ignore the fuel arithmetic. The ~400× shortfall is stated exactly because it dictates the timeline.
The arithmetic is unforgiving and it drives the whole program's shape: because a single commercial unit outstrips the standing terrestrial supply by roughly 400×, there is no version of a near-term burner fleet fuelled from Earth's inventory. Stating the factor exactly is what justifies building the breeder first and treating lunar helium-3 as a serious, not decorative, part of the long-term plan.
