Transmutation

Neutron reactions changing one element into another — useful for breeding, unwanted in structure.

Neutrons transmute nuclei into different elements: deliberately, to breed tritium; incidentally, to activate structural steel. Low-activation materials are chosen so incidental transmutation yields only short-lived isotopes.
