HYPERION's toroidal-field coils are D-shaped windings of REBCO high-temperature superconductor that produce the main confining field, reaching 16.84 T at the conductor. Their shape minimises bending stress, and a robust case and intercoil structure contain the enormous Lorentz forces.

Which machine uses the toroidal-field coils?

The breeder, HYPERION. They are its main confining magnet, D-shaped REBCO windings reaching 16.84 T at the conductor. The linear burner has no toroidal field — it confines its plasma in a straight solenoid instead.

Are these coils a standard or a first-of-a-kind component?
