Second Stability

A high-pressure regime accessible past the first ballooning limit.

At strong shaping and bootstrap, plasmas can re-stabilise above the first ballooning limit — 'second stability' — accessing higher pressure. It is one route to high beta, exploited by strongly-shaped designs.
