REBCO tape is a layered composite: a thin superconducting REBCO film on a strong metal substrate, stabilised with copper. It sustains very high current density in fields well beyond what low-temperature superconductors reach, which is why it enables the 16.84 T breeder field and the 26.49 T burner plug.
Kronos's REBCO study — deposited openly — maps the critical-current envelope, the winding-pack stack, bore-resolved stress, quench behaviour, neutron lifetime and fatigue, benchmarked against demonstrated coils.
REBCO tape is a layered composite — a micron-thin superconducting film on a strong metal substrate, stabilised with copper — and its tolerance to strain is what makes it manufacturable into large coils. It carries current densities and fields low-temperature superconductors cannot, enabling the 16.84 T breeder field, and Kronos's open REBCO study maps its critical-current envelope, stress and quench behaviour against demonstrated coils.
