Rational Surface

A flux surface where the safety factor is a simple fraction — where islands can grow.

A rational surface is one where field lines close on themselves after a whole number of turns (q = m/n). These surfaces are where tearing modes and magnetic islands preferentially form, so the current profile is shaped to manage them.
