Radiative Collapse

A runaway cooling of the plasma edge that can end a discharge.

If edge radiation exceeds the heating reaching the edge, the plasma cools, shrinks and can disrupt — a radiative collapse. Controlled radiation (for divertor protection) must stay short of this runaway.
