Magnet Quench Protection

Systems that safely dump a superconducting magnet's energy if it loses superconductivity.

If any part of a superconducting magnet warms above its critical temperature it 'quenches', and the stored magnetic energy must be dumped safely to avoid damage. Quench detection and protection are essential magnet-safety systems.

Kronos's magnet design is analysed for quench with an adiabatic hot-spot method and is reported as self-protecting within its design basis.
