Mass Defect

The tiny mass converted to energy in every fusion reaction.

A fused nucleus weighs slightly less than its parts; that missing mass becomes energy via E = mc². The mass defect is small per reaction but, multiplied by Avogadro's number, makes fusion millions of times more energy-dense than chemistry.
