The divertor and first wall must survive concentrated heat loads without failing. HYPERION's first wall is rated for 1.97 MW/m2, and its divertor relies on a high radiated fraction to spread the load — a named performance gate.
The burner's linear geometry and low neutron fraction give it far gentler heat-handling requirements.
Common questions
Concentrated exhaust power can exceed what any surface survives, so the divertor and first wall must be actively cooled and, where possible, shielded by radiating the power away before it lands.
