The gyrofrequency is the rate at which a particle orbits a magnetic field line, proportional to field strength. Radio waves tuned to it resonantly heat the plasma — the principle of ion- and electron-cyclotron heating.

The gyrofrequency, proportional to field strength, is the rate a particle spirals around a field line, and tuning radio waves to it heats the plasma resonantly — the basis of ion- and electron-cyclotron heating. Because it maps to field and hence position, the plasma's own cyclotron emission also provides a temperature-profile diagnostic.
