ELM Heat Loads
The transient heat pulses ELMs deposit on the divertor.
Each edge-localised mode dumps a burst of energy onto the divertor; large ones can erode or damage it. Suppressing ELMs — as HYPERION's negative triangularity aims to — protects the divertor's life.
