Ductile-Brittle Transition

The temperature below which a steel becomes brittle — raised by irradiation.

Ferritic steels turn brittle below a transition temperature, which irradiation shifts upward. Keeping operating temperatures above the irradiated transition is a structural-integrity requirement for the breeder.
