Branching Ratio

The split between a reaction's alternative outcomes, as in D–D.

Glossary of Fusion & Plasma TermsUpdated 2026-08-11

When a reaction can proceed by more than one channel — like D–D's near-equal tritium and helium-3 branches — the branching ratio sets how often each occurs. It matters for fuel cycles and side-reaction neutron production.
