Dr. Carl Weggel is a founding partner and Chief Scientist for the Kronos S.M.A.R.T. architecture — the Superconducting Min-Aspect-Ratio Torus that underpins both MetroVolt and AEGIS. His background is in the MIT Alcator program, the lineage of compact, high-field tokamak research that pioneered the very approach Kronos commercializes.
That experience is stamped across the design: a compact spherical tokamak at high field, integrating the plasma physics, the 24.6 T magnet system, and the direct-energy converter into one coherent architecture. As Chief Scientist he holds the through-line from physics to engineering that the four-part design series documents.
Dr. Carl Weggel was chief magnet designer for MIT's Alcator fusion program at the Plasma Fusion Center, where he designed the 14-tesla toroidal-field magnet for the record-setting Alcator C tokamak. He later helped design the high-field magnets for Commonwealth Fusion Systems' SPARC tokamak — the compact, high-field HTS approach Kronos also pursues. As a co-founder and Chief Scientist, he carries that magnet-and-architecture lineage directly into the S.M.A.R.T. design.
