Accessibility and Colorblind-Safe Design
The control room must work for every operator on every shift: redundant encodings, sufficient contrast, and legibility that does not depend on color vision.
Accessibility is an operational requirement
In a safety-critical control room, accessibility is not a courtesy — an operator who cannot reliably read a display is an operational risk. Kronos L6 is built so that no critical information depends on color perception, fine visual acuity, or ideal lighting. The bar is that the interface remains fully usable in grayscale and under degraded viewing conditions.
Redundant encoding
Every meaning carried by color is also carried by at least one other channel — shape, position, texture, or an explicit label. An alert is not merely a color; it has an icon, a position in the triage stream, and text. A low-confidence region on the twin is not merely dimmed; it is hatched. This redundancy is what makes color-vision deficiency, which affects roughly one in twelve men, a non-issue rather than a hazard.
- Color never sole carrier: shape/position/texture/label always back it up
- Contrast meets accessibility thresholds at each display's viewing distance
- Type scales with distance: wall glyphs and console text sized for their range
- CVD simulation over every screen (protan / deutan / tritan) before release
- Motion used sparingly and never as the only cue, to respect motion sensitivity
Testing, not assuming
Accessibility is verified, not asserted. Every screen is run through color-vision-deficiency simulation for the common types and checked for contrast at its intended viewing distance. Operators with different visual profiles participate in simulator sessions, and any screen that fails for any of them is revised. The same discipline that keeps the machine's uncertainty honest keeps the interface's legibility honest.
